Shubman Gill’s spectacular innings at Edgbaston cements his legacy, as he etches rare records into Indian cricket’s annals with patience, flair, and leadership.

Shubman Gill, often the subject of polarized debates, has answered his detractors with a resounding display of artistry and resolve. On the Edgbaston turf, Gill sculpted an innings of sublime poise, reaching a monumental 150 and affirming his stature as a leader. By doing so, he inscribed his name as only the second Indian captain to scale such heights in foreign conditions—a feat few dared to predict.

Before the squad embarked on this pivotal tour, voices of skepticism were rife regarding Gill’s ascension to captaincy. Critics castigated the selectors and BCCI for entrusting leadership to a batsman whose overseas record was patchy at best and whose 2021 home series was underwhelming. Many opined he was an untested starlet elevated prematurely. Yet, the narrative has shifted dramatically. Gill, with a century apiece in successive matches, has wielded the willow like a maestro silencing an unruly orchestra.

In the ongoing duel at Edgbaston, Gill’s patient yet commanding innings of 168 from 288 deliveries, peppered with 18 crisply timed fours and a solitary six, has placed him in rarified air. Other than Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli, he is the only Indian skipper to get two hundreds in a row. More astonishingly, he stands as the third Indian captain to amass twin hundreds batting at Only Hazare and Mohammad Azharuddin are behind him at number four after two innings.

His historic performance and the brilliant 87 from Yashasvi Jaiswal helped India to a solid 310 for 5 at stumps on Day Two. Rishabh Pant and K.L. Rahul fell early, while Karan Nair contributed 31. Notably, India has maintained its position of dominance thanks to Gill’s unwavering partnership with Ravindra Jadeja, who is valued at an undefeated 99 runs for the sixth wicket. Should India navigate the ensuing two sessions to breach the 450-run threshold, the onus will shift onto England, especially on a surface expected to unravel in favor of spin maestros Jadeja and Washington Sundar.

Gill has batted in SENA nations 29 times without scoring a century before taking over as captain. However, he has already amassed two hundred in just three innings as captain, which is a sign of growth and development. After Azharuddin (179 at Old Trafford, 1990), he is the second Indian skipper to cross the 150-run mark on English territory. A mere dozen runs separate Gill from the accolade of being India’s highest-scoring captain in England.

Milestones and Partnerships Under Gill’s Watch
