Hyderabad Metro’s fleet expansion has moved into a formal bidding process, with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation inviting offers for 60 standard-gauge coaches. Financial Express reported on October 19 that the proposed package is valued at ₹923.62 crore, excluding GST.
The procurement combines the supply of new rolling stock with a long-term maintenance requirement. For passengers, it is a step in the capacity-expansion process, rather than an announcement that additional trains are ready to enter service.
What the tender includes
The Government of India eProcurement listing identifies the project as HRS1, tender ID 2026_DMRC_930793_1. Its scope includes design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning and training for 60 metro cars, together with comprehensive maintenance of those cars and associated depot machinery for 15 years.
Financial Express identifies Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited as the project owner, with DMRC handling procurement on its behalf. The reported package also covers the tools, testing equipment and depot facilities needed to support the additional coaches.
Bid dates and completion period
The official procurement listing gives October 16, 2026, as the publication date. Bids are scheduled to close on January 13, 2027, at 3 pm, with opening listed for January 14 at 3:05 pm. Companies considering participation should check the live tender and any amendments before relying on these dates.
Financial Express reports a completion period of 125 weeks for the design-to-commissioning work. That contractual period is not a passenger-service launch date. The report does not confirm which routes will receive the coaches or when the expanded fleet will begin carrying commuters.
Why Hyderabad has been planning more coaches
The tender follows earlier planning by HMRL to respond to rising demand. In an official update dated January 29, 2026, the agency described plans for 60 additional coaches through new six-coach train sets. It said this work was being pursued independently of pending approvals for Phase-II corridors.
That distinction matters: buying rolling stock and securing permission for new corridors are separate parts of the Metro programme. An order for additional coaches should not be read as confirmation that a proposed extension has received approval or that a new line is about to open.
An earlier HMRL update, dated November 14, 2025, described a study covering peak and off-peak passenger loads, station footfall, route congestion and signalling capacity. The agency said it was considering different train configurations to match demand, rather than simply attaching every new coach to an existing train.
The wider focus on commuter convenience
At its July 31, 2026, board meeting, HMRL was also asked to accelerate additional-coach procurement. The official meeting account discussed common ticketing with RTC services, a shared mobile application and options for daily, weekly and monthly Metro passes.
Those were proposals and directions recorded at that meeting. The coach tender itself does not establish that those ticketing measures have been implemented. Together, the documents show that capacity, connections and passenger convenience have been recurring priorities in the agency’s planning.
What commuters should watch next
The next useful updates will concern the bidding outcome, contract award, final train configuration and deployment plan. Until those details are announced, the immediate confirmed development is the invitation for bids. A tender notice is not a contract award, and the published dates can change through official amendments.
